Trivia

  • According to the commentary, this episode came directly from the creators' annoyance at people in California with the same attitudes as those depicted in the episode. One instance in particular involved Trey Parker's mother getting a smuggy compliment one day after receiving a hybrid car from her son as a gift.
  • Gerald's license plate says "1TMYMPG" – pronounced "Want my miles per gallon?"
  • The hybrid dealership in South Park is Toyonda. A combination of the leading two hybrid producers, Toyota and Honda.
  • On the original television presentation, the first two minutes of this episode had an original score. On the DVD release, this was changed to a song.
  • One of the shops in San Francisco is called Jen and Berry's, Frozen Yogurt and Ice Cream, which is an obvious play on Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt. It is shown at the corner of Haight Street and Ashbury Street, where there is an actual Ben & Jerry's.
  • In Kyle's San Francisco room there is a poster for 'MC Dreidel', a possible parody of Matisyahu
  • George Clooney and the South Park creators were once close: for instance, Clooney was instrumental in promoting the pre-South Park short "The Spirit of Christmas: Jesus vs. Santa", eventually leading to the show's commission and he also played Dr. Doctor in South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut. In spite of this, Clooney's liberal views have caused Stone and Parker to mock him in recent years, most visibly in Team America: World Police as well as this episode.
  • All quotes from the Clooney acceptance speech are the real words he used, although it is Trey Parker saying them rather than actual audio of the speech.
  • The most frequently depicted hybrid car in this episode is the "Pious", a play on the world's first mass-marketed, and at present most popular hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Prius. A Honda Insight is also seen, called a "Hindsight" in the episode.
  • Isaac Hayes is no longer credited. In the opening sequence, the likeness of Chef is now replaced with Darth Chef, who was "introduced" in the last episode.
  • The concept of three storms colliding is taken from the movie The Perfect Storm, in which a group of fishermen from Maine get caught in a thunderstorm created from the combining of three smaller storm systems. The star of the movie is none other than George Clooney.
  • When Randy talks of "It's like 'Earth to America'?..." this is a reference to a 2 hour comedy event of the same name shown on TBS. Organized by Laurie David (Larry David's wife), it featured famous comedians and aimed to raise awareness of global warming.
  • When Kyle says "Don't belittle my people, you fucking fatass!", this is similar to a line from The Spirit of Christmas: Jesus vs. Santa.
  • The poster over Stan's right shoulder as he's talking to Cartman in his room is from Mad Max (1979), starring Mel Gibson.
  • Cartman sings Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye) by Steam in this episode.
  • Ranger McFriendly is a reference to Officer Friendly from Princess, a Flash cartoon Parker and Stone created.
  • The song that Stan writes (entitled People Now) parodies The Youngbloods' Get Together.
  • Kyle's computer screen reveals he is reading the blog of Jason Kottke, a smug blogger.
