| Trivia |
- The title is derived from that of the 1968 film Night of the Living Dead.
- The episode features numerous references to a variety of Zombie movies including 28 Days Later, Day of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Shaun of the Dead:
- The constant chanting for "change" by the homeless in this episode parodies the common zombie stereotypes of chanting "brains".
- When the town is over-run by the homeless this is reminiscent of the zombie take-over in Dawn of the Dead - in particular the series of car accidents that result from the chaos and the view of the action on the ground from the South Park Community Center. It is worth noting, however, that the episode features greater similarities with the more recent remake of the film than the 1978 original.
- The armored bus the boys build is similar to that found in the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead.
- The basement lab of the Town's homeless expert is reminiscent of Dr. Logan's zombie experiment lab in Day of the Dead. In addition, the homeless man chained to the wall is a spoof of the character "Bub".
- The man who picks up the boys in his car and dies later in a car accident appears to be Mayor McDaniels' assistant, Ted. The license plate on his car reads "J03M4M4" (Yo Momma).
- The song that Cartman and the boys sing to get the homeless to go to California is a parody of the rap song California Love by Tupac Shakur, featuring Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman. In the California Love redux at the end of the episode, the last verse contains the line "In the city, city of Venice. Right by Matt's house, you can chill if you're homeless". Matt Stone lives in Venice, and has alluded to the problem of homeless people there in interviews.
- Cartman's attempt to jump a homeless man on a skateboard is similar to a challenge in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 where the player must ollie a "Magic Bum" 5 times in the Venice Beach level.
- Trailers for this episode show a scene in which Randy runs into the Marsh house with all his family present. In the episode itself, the equivalent scene shows him running into the community center, where with the only family member present is Jimbo.
