Episode 908 - Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow
A global warming state of emergency is declared in South Park. Global Warming is determined to be the cause of the massive flood that destroys a neighboring town. The world’s largest beaver dam breaks and the waters overtake the adjacent town of Beaverton. As the victims wait for help to arrive, everyone in South Park tackles priority number one: who is to blame? The President, the mayor, scientists, the press and even the flood victims themselves are all busy pointing fingers. Only Stan and Cartman know who’s really at fault.

Trivia

  • This episode is a parody of the 2005 film The Day After Tomorrow and also of reactions to the effect of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans and other Gulf Coast areas. In particular the various explantions for the increased level of suffering from the hurricane and its aftermath, including accusations that global warming was the cause of violent hurricanes.
  • The episode also seems to satirise the misplaced anger and unwillingness to negotiate between all the parties in the Katrina relief effort, the distorted media coverage that occurred during the hurricane's aftermath, and the Houston mass evacuation during Hurricane Rita.
  • "George Bush doesn't care about beavers!" - Refers to Kanye West saying that "George Bush doesn't care about black people" during a Katrina relief concert on September 2nd.
  • The man with the shopping cart full of beer is a parody of the black man wading through the flood after Hurricane Katrina with a bucket full of beer (see Looter Guy, Hurricane Hero).
  • The exaggerated numbers used throughout the episode (for instance, temperatures dropping to -70m degrees) reflect the number of feared dead versus the number of actual dead found in the aftermath of Katrina. Ten thousand body bags were ordered for New Orleans but only 800 or so bodies were found there.
  • The Crab People appeared in South Park is Gay! and are similarly mentioned in Quest for Ratings. They appear to have been adopted by Stone and Parker as a representation of all utterly ridiculous ideas.
  • The giant penis Randy Marsh draws on the map of America is most likely based on a real National Weather Service wind distribution map for Hurricane Rita, which bore an unfortunate resemblance to a giant penis (see here).
  • When Randy gives his warning speech, the geologists start saying "peas and carrots" aloud, over and over again. This is a standard phrase that extras (background actors) mouth to make it appear that they are actually saying something.
  • The boat "Roy's Royce" is a play on the luxury car maker Rolls-Royce.
  • At the end of the episode where the adults proclaim one after the other "I broke the dam", "I broke the dam" etc. this may be a possible allusion to the classic scene in the 1960 film Spartacus where the Roman gladiators similarly proclaim "I'm Spartacus", "I'm Spartacus" to demonstrate solidarity and to protect the real Spartacus from being punished by the Romans.
  • The scene where Cartman forces Kyle to hand over his "Jew-gold" at gunpoint is very similar to the finale of Marathon Man.
